The construction of the Flavian amphitheater, better known all over the world as a Colosseum, began in 72 AD. under the emperor Vespasian and ended only eight years later under the emperor Titus. Built in travertine and tuff it is the largest amphitheater in the world and is considered the symbol of the majesty of Imperial Rome. The Colosseum housed the favorite shows of Roman society as the fights between animals, often exotic and the highly anticipated gladiator fights. The Colosseum could accommodate up to 80,000 spectators who could quickly drain, thanks to a modern conception of the structures, at the end of the shows. Special fabric covers called "velarium", operated by expert sailors from the fleet of Capo Miseno, also guaranteed effective protection from the sun from bad weather. Today the Colosseum is one of the most visited monuments in the world and the undisputed symbol of Rome and Italy.
